“Alligator Toenails”
Copyright by Frank A DeCenso, Jr.
I
saw her at a bar fight outside Reno,
Sweat
was soaking right through all her clothes;
Broke some biker’s jawbone with her first punch,
And
a pitcher worth of beer came out his nose.
She
saw me hiding near an old time jukebox...
While
Cash was singing “Folsom Prison Blues”;
She
picked me up and said “you’re such a cutie –
Now
let’s hit the road before I'm on the news.”
CHORUS
Her necklace had ten
alligator toenails,
She wasn’t much to look
at with one tooth;
She looked like she
could throw you like a football,
While eating a box of Baby Ruths.
She
drove just like a drunken Nascar driver,
She
swerved and laughed at stories that she told;
Said she came from somewhere that was muddy,
Then asked me if I thought that she was old.
She
turned to me and said she’d been through heartaches,
Ever
since she was a younger Bayou queen;
She
bet she had a harder life than most girls,
Right
before we hit some Willow trees.
CHORUS
Her necklace had ten
alligator toenails,
She wasn’t much to look
at with one tooth;
She looked like she
could throw you like a football,
While eating a box of Baby Ruths.
Lying
near some sagebrush she kept talking,
As
blood kept falling from her wounded frame;
She
whispered that she never had a good friend,
That
she could share her whole life or a name.
She
told me everything she could remember,
From
broken childhood to shattered dreams;
As
I held her hand I promised she’d have more time,
But
she closed her eyes while smiling up at me.
CHORUS
Her necklace had ten
alligator toenails,
She wasn’t much to look
at with one tooth;
She looked like she
could throw you like a football,
While eating a box of Baby Ruths.
